If a solar eclipse is only partial, you can't see it with the naked eye, but you can project it onto a surface to see the shape of the occlusion. My dad rigged this up:
At about 19:40-19:50 on Wed 4 Dec 2002, this could be seen from my house (Melbourne, Australia):
This picture was taken during a different partial eclipse which happened on 16 Feb 1999:
